After acquiring a BA degree in Economics from Hitotsubashi University in 1979, M. Ueda joined Mitsubishi Bank Limited. In 1983, he moved to American Express International Japan, where he held a number of key positions including Vice President, Consumer Card and Regional Business Leader Japan/Korea for Global Network Services. He was appointed Vice Chairman of American Home Assurance Company (Japan), an AIG operation, in 2000, and became Chairman and CEO in the following year. In 2007, he was appointed Chairman and CEO of Cecile Company Limited (then listed on Tokyo Stock Exchange and a Livedoor subsidiary), to reform corporate governance and revitalize the company’s business. In 2013, Cecile was successfully merged with Dinos Company Limited to become part of Dinos Cecile Company Limited, and he became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the new entity (until 2015).

M. Ueda has also served as Advisor to ING Direct (2007~2008), Guest Professor and Guest Lecturer at Kagawa University (2010~2016), Representative Director, Almado Company Limited (1998~2014), Chairman and CEO, Cecile Shanghai Company Limited (2009~2015), Advisor, Dinos-Cecile Company Limited (June 2015~June 2016), Executive Advisor to KCJ Group Incorporated, which operates a children’s role playing facility called Kidzania (2014~2019) etc. His current assignments include, Director of The Board Director Training Institute of Japan (from June 2014), Independent Outside Director of McDonald’s Holdings Japan Limited, listed in JASDAQ (from March 2016) , Independent Outside Director of Higashi Nippon Bank, Ltd. (from June 2018),  Consultant of Scala, Inc., Managing Director of Japan Golf Tour Organization, Adviser of Wave Corporation, Adviser of MoriX Co., Ltd., Chairman of Eggshell Membrane Association, Part-time Professor of Kagawa University etc.

He has written books on direct marketing (not for sale) and communications (digital book), but they are only available in Japanese.

The Board Director Training Institute (BDTI) is a "public interest" nonprofit in Japan dedicated to training about directorship, corporate governance, and related management techniques.
