Kyoji Fukao

Professor Fukao received his B.A. and M.A. in Economics from Tokyo University. His fields of specialty include the analysis of productivity and innovation, and the economics of international trade and direct investment. In addition to his academic and research duties at Hitotsubashi, he serves as Faculty Fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI); and Chief Research Fellow of the Asian Study Division, at the Japan Center of Economic Research. Professor Fukao has also served as a Councilor at Hitotsubashi University, and as a researcher and visiting scholar at Yale University, Boston University, METI, the ADB Institute, and the Bank of Japan. He is the author or co-author of many books and papers, including “Foreign Direct Investment and the Japanese Economy”, which won the prestigious NIRA prize (Nihon Keizai Shinbunsha, 2005); “The East Asian Strategies of Japanese Companies”, (Nihon Keizai Shinbunsha, 2008); and “The Structural Causes of the ‘Lost 20 Years”.  The latter paper was the basis for an article in the Nikkei Newspaper’s “Keizai Kyoshitu” column(http://www.rieti.go.jp/en/papers/contribution/fukao/08.html ) ,  and was published in a separate version by RIETI.
