Corporate Governance Models and Practices in Japan and East Asia
January 12, 2013, Waseda University, Global COE Program – This symposium will examine Japanese corporate governance, both theory and practice, in relation to corporate governance systems in other East Asian countries.
After touching on historical connections, the main focus will be on current similarities and differences: (i) in basic areas such as the goals of corporate governance and its reform and, (ii) on specific issues such as the functioning of the board of directors and the role of independent directors.
In addition, it will include a discussion of the extent to which it may be necessary in the future to harmonize corporate governance systems in East Asia to accommodate increasing regional trade and investment.
The first panel, composed of leading mid-career experts on corporate governance from all of the main countries in East Asia, will engage in a panel discussion on these topics. The second panel, composed of well-known scholars and practitioners, will provide additional comments on the topics under discussion from a variety of perspectives.
