What started in the back offices of public relations departments has made its way to the boardroom. Corporate responsibility and sustainability (CR&S) is now widely regarded as a competitive advantage, and many would say it has indeed become a business imperative. Yet many companies are still looking for answers about what kind of internal organization should support their CR&S efforts.
As we consider the design ofBDTI's group learning courses for training directors and executives in Japan, I have been reading various books on the influence of language and culture on fundamental thought processes. I am particularly interested in the studies described in The Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners Think Differently… And Why(Free Press, 2003), a book by Professor Richard Nisbett of the University of Michigan.
In 2004 the UN had an outside consultant conduct an anonymous survey of its organizational integrity. The report is eye-opening in the sense that it confirms clearly that transparency, process, values, reporting etc. are important, but by far the most important thing is the tone at the top: ethical leadership that is setby goodexample, andfrom leadersbeing heldaccountable.
